The tidal flats in South Korea are recognized as a heritage that needs to be protected by all mankind.

  The UNESCO World Heritage Committee unanimously approved the inclusion of South Korea's tidal flats in the "World Natural Heritage List", claiming that South Korean tidal flats are stopovers for endangered migratory birds, which are of great value and recognized their outstanding universal value.

  The South Korean tidal flats included in the list are the Seochon tidal flats of Chungcheongnam-do, Gochang tidal flats of Jeollabukdo, Sinan tidal flats of Jeollanam-do, and Boseong and Suncheon tidal flats of Jeollanam-do.

  According to reports, Xin'an has the largest area among the four beaches.

There are 22 endangered waterbirds, 5 marine invertebrates, and 47 native species such as tiger crabs inhabiting the tidal flats of South Korea.

  Earlier in May, the World Conservation Union (IUCN) proposed a “return and re-report” proposal for the joint application of South Korean tidal flats in Seochon, Chungcheongnam-do, Gochang, Jeollabuk-do, Sinan, Jeollanam-do, Boseong, Jeollanam-do and Suncheon. .

  Kim Hyunmo, director of the Korean Cultural Heritage Agency, said that South Korea introduced the value of South Korean tidal flats to the member countries one by one, and positively explained that the strategy has finally succeeded.

  World heritage is divided into three categories: cultural heritage, natural heritage, and natural and cultural heritage. South Korea’s tidal flats are natural heritages.

Following the volcanic islands and lava caves of Jeju, this is the second time that Korea’s natural heritage has been successfully applied for.

So far, South Korea’s world heritage has increased to 15 items.
