Greek state television network ERT has fired a TV presenter from its morning program dedicated to covering the Olympics, due to his racist comments.

Demosthenes Karmoires was talking about South Korean Jeong Yong-sik's victory over Panagiotis Jeunes in table tennis, when Carmoires said he could not comprehend how "these people can follow the ball back and forth with such narrow eyes."

Immediately after the statement, a wave of anger erupted against Karmoires on social media.

Hours later, the channel's management announced the dismissal of Karmoires on the grounds that his racist remarks would not be tolerated.

Karmoires was criticized on Monday, when he said that "Greek archer Anna Korakaki spoiled the matter in this Olympics, as she finished the competitions with air pistol shooting from a distance of 10 meters in sixth place."
