  He is Chen Ziyang from Kajang, Selangor. After his parents passed away, he received social and economic assistance for further studies. He has completed bachelor and master programs at King's College London and Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. He is currently studying for a doctorate at Cambridge University.

  However, with a high degree of education, he has not forgotten his roots, and plans to return to Malaysia after completing a three-year doctoral program, to give back the knowledge he has learned to the society, and to join the government in formulating policies that benefit the people in the future to contribute to the country.

  Chen Ziyang, who has just completed his master's thesis from Cambridge University, shared his experience of studying abroad alone after his parents passed away in an online interview with Sin Chew Daily, and hoped that this experience can inspire other students and have nothing to do.   "My father died of illness when I was 13 years old, and my mother died of breast cancer when I was 18 when I was enrolled in the A-level course at Kuala Lumpur Methodist College."

  He said that after his father passed away, his mother Huang Mingjiao spent many years alone and brought him up. "It is a pity that my mother failed to witness my graduation."

  Recalling the moments of his mother’s life, Chen Ziyang said that he was very grateful to his mother who often used the famous saying "Passing the customs is difficult to pass the customs" to encourage him. It was also the famous quote used by his mother that allowed him to overcome the life alone and resolutely go to the UK to complete his studies.

  Chen Ziyang admires his mother's self-improvement spirit, because his mother not only needs to earn money to support the family by herself, but also suffers from breast cancer.

  "For many years, my mother raised me and tearfully encouraged me to study hard. At first, I didn't realize it. I didn't make up my mind until my mother passed away. I must go to top universities to study and advance."

  He said that the death of his parents has caused him to face a certain degree of financial difficulties. Relatives and friends also discourage him from studying in the UK. He hopes that after completing the A-level courses, he will find a job and increase his income as soon as possible to solve current and future problems. Economic problems.

  However, Chen Ziyang, who is determined, did not give up his dream even when faced with the economic problems of entering a higher education. On the contrary, he actively applied for scholarships for further studies from various institutions. Whether he was rejected or not, he believed that he could succeed.

  With a firm goal, Chen Ziyang did not waste many years of painstaking efforts of his mother. After overcoming various social, economic and psychological pressures, he finally succeeded in obtaining a scholarship from Khazanah.

  "Although I am facing the tuition problem, I actively apply for various scholarships. Fortunately, I finally achieved A-level results. After many elections, I successfully won the scholarship and went to the UK for further studies."

19-year-old went to Britain alone to study for PhD

  Chen Ziyang went to the UK in 2017. At the time he was only 19 years old. Without the company of his parents, he flew alone to King's College London to study International Relations and completed a three-year bachelor's degree.

  Speaking of the experience of studying in the UK, he said that the people and things he comes into contact with in life seem to have opened up a new world and have a broader perspective on life.

  After completing a three-year bachelor's course at King's College London, he then went to Cambridge University to study for a master's degree in sociology, and completed his graduation thesis within two years. Now he has successfully obtained three scholarships and continues to pursue a doctoral degree.

  He pointed out that the scholarship program won is used for tuition and living expenses for PhD degree studies.

  Today's Chen Ziyang has a bright future, but he does not deny that he is not an excellent student in the middle school.

His test score for the Malaysian Diploma of Education (SPM) is 6A6B.

  He confessed that he only woke up when his mother died of breast cancer when he was 18 years old, and realized that he had to work hard to determine his own life direction when he lost his financial support.

  "After my mother passed away, it made me realize that if I don't work hard to change my life, I will sink forever."

Hope to return from learning to contribute to society

  Today, Chen Ziyang's independent and hard-working spirit in studying abroad has also made relatives and friends very proud. He has planned to return to Malaysia in July to visit relatives and friends.

  He said that although the results of the master's degree have not been announced, he has received the admission letter from the University of Cambridge and will pursue a doctorate degree in development. He has set the direction of the thesis.
