Venice, five Italian films in competition: it is a record

Five Italian films are in competition at the 78th Venice Film Festival which will take place between the first and the 11th of September next. All highly anticipated and prestigious titles: It was the hand of God, by Oscar winner Paolo Sorrentino, Here I laugh by Mario Martone on the great Eduardo Scarpetta played by Toni Servillo, Freaks Out by Gabriele Mainetti with Claudio Santamaria and Pietro Castellitto, Il buco di Michelangelo Frammartino from an extraordinary Italian venture of speleology and Latin America, a thriller by the D'Innocenzo brothers with Elio Germano. There are 21 films in competition, 4 women directors are competing: Jane Campion with The Power of the Dog (at the Lido 22 years after Holy Smoke, in 1999), Ana Lily Amirpour with Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon (after the Special of the Jury obtained in 2016 with The Bad Batch),Audrey Diwan with L'évènement, then Maggie Gyllenhaal with the first work - the only one in competition - The Lost Daughter (from the novel of the same name by Elena Ferrante) and the Russian director Natasha Merkulova, who co-directs Captain Volkonogov Escaped with Aleksey Chupov. As per rumors on the eve, then, confirmed in the race Spencer by Pablo Larraín (who returns two years after Ema), The Card Counter by Paul Schrader (four years after First Reformed), Un autre monde by Stéphane Brizé (five years after Une vie ) and Competencia Oficial by Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn (who surprised in 2016 with The Illustrious Citizen), in addition to the previously announced opening film Madres Paralelas by Pedro Almodóvar. Then Michel Franco (who last year won the Grand Jury Prize with Nuevo Orden) with Sundown are back in competition,and the French Xavier Giannoli (six years after Marguerite) with Illusions perdues. Completing the picture On the Job: The Missing 8 by Filipino Erik Matti (208 minutes) - sequel to On the Job, directed in 2013 and hosted at the Cannes Quinzaine -, Leave no Traces by Polish Jan P. Matuszynski, Vidblysk (Reflection) by the Ukrainian Valentyn Vasyanovych and La Caya by Lorenzo Vigas, the Venezuelan director who in 2015 won the Golden Lion with Ti watcho.
