July 26, 2021 There are five Italian films in competition at the 78th Venice Film Festival which will take place between September 1 and 11.



All highly anticipated and prestigious titles: It was the hand of God, by Oscar winner Paolo Sorrentino, Here I laugh by Mario Martone on the great Eduardo Scarpetta played by Toni Servillo, Freaks Out by Gabriele Mainetti with Claudio Santamaria and Pietro Castellitto, Il buco di Michelangelo Frammartino from an extraordinary Italian venture of speleology and Latin America, a thriller by the D'Innocenzo brothers with Elio Germano.



There are 21 films in competition, 4 women directors are competing: Jane Campion with The Power of the Dog (at the Lido 22 years after Holy Smoke, in 1999), Ana Lily Amirpour with Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon (after the Special of the Jury obtained in 2016 with The Bad Batch), Audrey Diwan with L'évènement, then Maggie Gyllenhaal with the first work - the only one in the competition - The Lost Daughter (from the novel of the same name by Elena Ferrante) and the Russian director Natasha Merkulova, who co-directs with Aleksey Chupov Captain Volkonogov Escaped.
