The Election Commission of the Union of Myanmar announces the abolition of the results of the annual general election

Xinhua News Agency, Yangon, July 26 (Reporter Zhang Dongqiang) The re-organized Union Election Commission of Myanmar issued an announcement on the 26th that the general election held on November 8, 2020 was illegal and unfair, and the result of the election was abolished.

The announcement stated that the Federal Election Commission had reviewed the ballots in the general election last year and found a variety of illegal and unfair circumstances.

Myanmar held general elections in November last year, and the National League for Democracy (NLD) won more than half of the federal parliamentary seats.

The Myanmar military and the NLD had differences over the results of the general election. The military believed that there was fraud in the general election, demanded an investigation, and postponed the convening of a new federal parliament meeting.

But the NLD refused.

On February 1 this year, Myanmar President Win Myint, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and some senior officials of the Democratic League were detained by the military.

The Myanmar military subsequently declared a one-year state of emergency, and national power was transferred to the commander-in-chief of the National Defense Forces Min Aung Lai.

On February 2, the General Command of the Myanmar National Defense Forces announced the establishment of the National Management Committee, with Min Aung Lai as the chairman of the committee, and the establishment of a 6-member Federal Election Committee.
