July 26, 2021 Sardinia, which has been burning for 60 hours, decrees a state of emergency. The budget of the vast fire that broke out in the province of Oristano and not yet completely tamed: almost 1,500 people displaced is heavy. The flames are estimated to have covered about 20,000 hectares, but the figure is still provisional. Houses and businesses damaged.

Five Canadair of the national fleet resumed throwing water this morning on the Oristanese, which has been burning for two days now.

For a faster resolution of the emergency, the Civil Protection Department has activated an international cooperation module.

A new fire hazard forecast bulletin for today, Monday 26 July, has been published by the regional Civil Protection.

The affected area also extends over part of the Nuorese area. An unspecified number of animals were killed in one of the most disastrous weekends in that part of Sardinia.

The images arrived yesterday from the places of the stake are shocking: charred flocks, the sky darkened by smoke, flames everywhere, close to houses and streets, to illuminate the night and keep entire villages awake. The environmental damage is incalculable.

The fire devastated the Montiferru woods, between the green areas of the island, and farms and forced hundreds of men and women, between Saturday and Sunday, to leave their homes as a precaution. About eighty people have not yet been able to return: 50 elderly people from a retirement home in Cuglieri, one of the municipalities most affected by the flames, and thirty inhabitants of Borore (Nuoro). Four more Canadair are expected, two from France and as many from Greece: the first are flying to Sardinia, the other two have already landed in Alghero at 4.30. (Remediation operations also began this morning.

The fire fronts are still active in the Oristano area between Scano Montiferro, where over 400 people were evacuated yesterday, and Tresnuraghes. The local teams that worked all night were joined by the mobile columns of the Regional Forestry Corps, the Forestas Agency and the Civil Protection, arriving from Cagliari, Nuoro and Sassari. The helicopters of the regional fleet are also in flight, including the SuperPuma which took off from Fenosu.

On the ground there are 57 fire brigade units, of which 28 from the Nuoro, Sassari and Cagliari commands and 29 from the Oristano command: they are engaged, in particular in Santu Lussurgiu, Cuglieri, Tresnuraghes (where three teams have worked all night and protected two accommodation activities), and in the seaside village of Porto Alabe, Flussio, Sennariolo, Usellus, Scano Montiferro and Cabras.

The wind has changed direction several times in the last few days and made the extinguishing operations even more demanding, also conducted in collaboration with a helicopter from the Sassari Fire Brigade Flight Department. Meanwhile, the latest bulletin of the Regional Civil Protection reports for today an orange code (yesterday it was red) in a large part of Sardinia, including Cagliari and the Oristano area.

Entire communities are on their knees, the damage is enormous and still to be estimated, in an area of Sardinia already particularly affected by the pandemic and the lack of health services, as reported last week by the mayors of Oristano who had demonstrated on the highway 131.

" We ask for an immediate investigation ", urges Claudio Atzori, president of Legacoop Sardegna," to verify the reason for the damage to homes and businesses, in or close to the villages, which should have been protected, through greater attention in the maintenance phase of the territory and prevention".
