Following New York City, California has also launched mandatory vaccinations for state officials.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement that he would require more than 246,000 state employees and health workers to be vaccinated.

The order requires California state officials to provide proof of vaccination after they have been vaccinated, or to be screened regularly for COVID-19 if they do not.

Mandatory measures will be implemented from the 9th to the 23rd of the following month.

In California, 64% of residents have completed the first dose, but the delta mutation has recently been spreading in metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles (LA) County and San Diego County.

"There's a pandemic happening among people who haven't been vaccinated," Governor Newsom said.

Prior to the compulsory vaccination in New York and California, more than 50 health organizations, including the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Nurses Association (ANA), issued a joint statement on the same day, calling for mandatory vaccination of healthcare workers.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 163 million people in the United States who have received the second injection have been fully vaccinated, or 49.1% of the total population in the United States.

CNN reported that, citing data from Johns Hopkins University, the number of new coronavirus cases increased by at least 10% compared to the previous week in 48 states last week, and the rate of increase in new infections exceeded 50% in 34 states.
