The largest fire right now, in the state of Oregon in the western United States, covers an area larger than Öland.

2,300 firefighters are working to extinguish it alone - and the smoke has polluted the air all the way to the east coast and New York.

SVT's team in the USA has met several people living in the area.

One of them is Bruce White, who lost everything.

- I cried for five minutes, and then I was angry for five minutes.

Then I hugged the dog and said: "Now we move on.", He says to SVT, and looks at the charred remains of what was once his cabin.

"There is no lightening"

Foreign Reporter Tomas Thorén describes the situation in Oregon as still critical.

He has also met other residents who are even considering leaving the state and moving to a less affected area.

- Attempts are being made to limit the spread, parts of the fire have been brought under control.

But extinguishing this fire is out of the question in weeks, maybe months.

And as long as it is extremely hot, as long as it is dry, the firefighters have a proper uphill slope, he says.

A total of 22,000 firefighters are currently working to put out fires in the western United States.

- They work in two-week shifts and they are very exhausted, and there is no lightening either.

This situation is expected to continue for several months to come.

Extremely dry in California

Even farmers are now having a hard time.

Many find it difficult to get water and feed for the animals and some have even lost animals in the fires.

In San Francisco, California, where SVT is currently located, you are also experiencing one of the worst periods of drought you have seen.

There, the highways are lined with dehydrated lakes.

- It was a terrible sight, and that's what it looks like in large parts of northern California, says Tomas Thorén.
