July 26, 2021 First gold medal today in the history of the Olympic Games for the Philippines.

The Asian country had never climbed the top step of the podium, instead collecting 3 silvers and 7 bronzes, 10 medals in all.

The icebreaker was Hidilyn Diaz in women's weightlifting, 55 kg category.

Diaz herself had won silver in the same specialty at Rio 2016. Over the past 60 years the Philippines had won two silvers and two bronzes, all in boxing.

The other medals had been won before World War II.
