After Tibet's peaceful liberation in May 1951, Tibet's road network construction gradually started, but due to national strength and technical difficulties, the Sichuan-Tibet Railway has not yet started construction.

In December 2018, the Chengdu-Ya'an section of the eastern section of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway was first opened for operation.

Construction of the last section of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway, from Ya'an in Sichuan to Linzhi in Tibet, has also started.

After the completion of the entire Sichuan-Tibet Railway, it will become the second "sky road" into Tibet after the Qinghai-Tibet Railway.

  The Lalin Railway runs through the valleys of southeastern Tibet between the Gangdese Mountains and the Himalayas on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. More than 90% of the lines are above 3000 meters above sea level. It crosses the Yarlung Zangbo River 16 times with a relative elevation difference of 2500 meters. The terrain and geological conditions are extremely complicated.

The entire Sichuan-Tibet railway line has "eight ups and downs", with a cumulative climb height of more than 14,000 meters. The construction difficulty is the world's most difficult, and the construction period will exceed 10 years.

Before the peaceful liberation, transportation in Tibet basically relied on people carrying animals on their backs, and there was no highway in the modern sense.

"The rocks are crisscrossing, the roads are endless, the hardships and dangers, and the unspeakable state" was once a true portrayal of Tibet's traffic conditions.

As of the end of 2020, the total mileage of roads in Tibet Autonomous Region has exceeded 110,000 kilometers, the mileage of railway operations has exceeded 950 kilometers, and 130 routes have been opened.

The modern transportation network extending in all directions makes the "sky moat" in the snowy area a thoroughfare.

Crossing the sky and extending happiness

  The construction of major infrastructure such as roads and railways has paved the road to well-off and happiness for the Tibetan people.

Behind this is the continuous improvement of the country's comprehensive national strength, and it also bears the original mission of the Chinese Communists.

  In 1951, Tibet was peacefully liberated. In the following three years, more than 100,000 soldiers and civilians worked bravely under extremely difficult conditions to build the Sichuan-Tibet Highway and the Qinghai-Tibet Highway with a total length of 4,360 kilometers. This ended Tibet’s history of no modern highways and created it. One is not afraid of hardship, second is not afraid of death, tenacious hard work, willing to be a road stone, the military-civilian family, and the "two-way" spirit of national unity.

In 2014, General Secretary Xi Jinping made important instructions on the 60th anniversary of the opening of the Sichuan-Tibet and Qinghai-Tibet highways, demanding that the spirit of "two roads" be further promoted and promote the development of Tibet.

  The Qinghai-Tibet Railway is another feat created by the Chinese people under the leadership of the Communist Party of China.
