Faced for two months with a vast Taliban offensive, the Afghan authorities decreed, Saturday, July 24, a night curfew throughout the country with the exception of three provinces, including that of Kabul.

"In order to stem the violence and limit the movements of the Taliban, a curfew has been decreed in 31 provinces of the country," said the Afghan Ministry of the Interior in a statement, specifying that only the provinces of Kabul, Panchir (northeast) and Nangarhar (east) are not affected by this measure.

10 p.m. to 4 a.m. curfew

Deputy ministry spokesman Ahmad Zia Zia said in a message to reporters that the curfew would be in effect from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

He did not indicate for how long the measure would be applied.

The insurgents launched an all-out offensive against Afghan forces in early May, with the start of the final withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan, scheduled to be completed by the end of August.

The Taliban have captured large rural parts of the country and Afghan forces, which so far have offered little resistance, essentially control only the main roads and provincial capitals.
