The World Meteorological Organization warns of the risks associated with weather and water caused by climate change

Petteri Taalas, Secretary-General of the United Nations World Meteorological Organization, has warned that weather and water-related risks are increasing in frequency and intensity as a result of climate change.

A statement issued by the organization yesterday referred to the recent heat waves that broke the record, especially in North America, and this matter is linked to global warming.

The Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization stressed that no country in the world is immune from the repercussions of climate change, stressing the need to invest more in adaptation to climate change, by strengthening early warning systems.

António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, had expressed his concern about the devastating floods in different regions of the world.

According to a new analysis by the World Meteorological Organization, climate-related risks have dominated the list of disasters in terms of human and economic losses over the past 50 years.

The analysis shows that among the 10 most disasters, the risks that led to the greatest human losses during this period were droughts, storms and extreme temperatures, according to the WHO’s Atlas of deaths and economic losses caused by weather, climatic and water phenomena between 1970 - 2019.
