The mutated Delta strain of “Corona” dominates 19 countries in Europe

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, based in Stockholm, and the European Office of the World Health Organization, based in Copenhagen, announced today, Friday, that the mutated “delta” strain of the highly contagious Corona virus (Covid-19) is now dominating large parts of Europe.

Data collected between June 28 and July 11 showed that the Delta strain sweeps across 19 out of 28 countries with sufficient information.

The average proportion of delta cases analyzed in these 19 countries was 68.3%, while the median proportion of cases of the previously dominant alpha strain was 22.3%.

At the same time, the two health authorities drew attention to the need to intensify efforts once again to prevent the transmission of the Corona virus.

The number of confirmed cases in Europe has risen in each of the past four weeks, with a particularly rapid increase among young people.

The Delta strain has already been detected in almost all European countries and will continue to spread to replace other strains unless a new virus emerges.

According to current trends, the delta breed will become dominant worldwide within the coming months.

"We are far from a near end to the pandemic, and unfortunately we are seeing in many countries in our region a significant increase in cases associated with the spread of the highly contagious delta strain," said WHO Regional Director Hans Kluge.

"The good news is that the data clearly shows that receiving a complete vaccination series significantly reduces the risk of severe illness and death," he added.

Therefore, the call for vaccination must be answered.”
