The devastating floods that hit central China have left at least 51 dead, according to a count updated Friday (July 23) by local authorities.
The previous report reported 33 dead.
Henan, China's third most populous province - with a population of nearly 100 million - has suffered historic precipitation in recent days that has turned the streets into torrents of mud.
Its capital, Zhengzhou, was particularly damaged, to the point that a subway train was swallowed up on Tuesday, killing 12 people.
More than 395,000 people evacuated
The inclement weather caused the evacuation of more than 395,000 people and caused damage estimated at 65.5 billion yuan - the equivalent of 8.5 billion euros.
In Zhengzhou, a metropolis of 10 million inhabitants, firefighters and rescuers were always busy Friday with huge pumps to remove the volumes of water accumulated in the streets.
The heavy rains are now concentrated in the north of the province, where they have caused catastrophic flooding, AFP journalists noted.
