Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has accused Green Chancellor candidate Annalena Baerbock of jeopardizing a secure energy supply by rejecting the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

“A large industrialized country like Germany depends on the security of supply being guaranteed at all times and that energy remains affordable for everyone.

Ms. Baerbock overlooks this in her repeated attacks against the Baltic Sea pipeline, ”said Schwesig.

Germany needs a sensible energy policy.

The focus is on the expansion of renewable energies and the development of storage technologies.

"But if we want to get out of nuclear and coal power, we need gas at least for a transitional period," Schwesig justified her support for the construction of the gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea.

The pipeline has been approved under the rule of law and will now be completed soon after the agreement between Germany and the USA.

“That is also in the German interest.

With the agreement, the threats of sanctions are finally gone, ”said Schwesig.

Baerbock had previously criticized the agreement between Germany and the US government on Nord Stream 2 in the FAZ. "This joint declaration is not a solution - especially not for the security of Ukraine," said Baerbock. The US government has lifted the sanctions against the companies involved in Nord Stream 2, but stressed that the pipeline has not yet been fully approved in view of the EU requirements for unbundling and access by third parties. The operation is far from being secured.
