The head of the Environment and Natural Reserves Department in the Municipality of Dibba Al-Fujairah, Engineer Fatima Rahma Al-Hantoubi, revealed to "Emirates Today" that the municipality was able in the first half of this year to deal professionally and quickly with six reports of oil pollution, which damaged the city's beaches.

She stressed that the first report of marine oil pollution received by her department since the beginning of this year in April, and is considered the largest pollution incidents during this year because it lasted a week, and the marine environment was damaged by it in addition to the coasts, and the second communication in May reported the presence of oil pollution at sea that lasted for a period of time. Four days, the last one in June, was light pollution.

Al-Hantoubi noted that marine pollutants that consist of oil spills continuously reach the coasts of Khorfakkan city without stopping, and have negative effects on the environment in general, and various living organisms, which means that redoubled efforts must be made to combat them, noting that the municipality teams are working in the immediate fight against any marine pollution. It extends to the city's coasts to prevent it from extending into the beaches. The municipality also warns the public against going to the sea and using the beach during that period because of the unpleasant odors, in addition to the chemicals found in crude oil.

She pointed out that marine pollution affects the marine reserves in the Dibba Al-Fujairah region, which must ensure a natural and safe environment for the reproduction of rare species of fish and rare marine creatures for which the East Coast region is famous in order to preserve the wildlife in these reserves.

Al Hantobi stressed that the marine and coastal environment in the country has received special attention and the efforts made by the concerned authorities to protect the marine environment and its wealth, including the issuance and application of legislation and regulations to protect it from pollution, the regulation of activities in the marine environment or on the coastal strip, and the establishment of marine protected areas to maintain on biodiversity and its development.

He pointed out that the municipality periodically communicates with its partners in the governmental and private sectors and with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment in cooperation in order to work to bring greater protection to the marine and coastal environment and preserve its vital role through the application of the principles of integrated management of the marine and coastal environment.
