July 21, 2021 Bad weather alert in Henan, a province that is home to about 94 million people: the unusually active rainy season has led to new hardships and disasters. The city of Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan province, recorded 12 deaths, people being stranded in the subway flooded by water. More than 100,000 evacuated from the most affected areas.

Chinese President

Xi Jinping called the floods affecting China "extremely serious"

and in particular the province of Henan stressing that "saving people's lives is the top priority" of the authorities. According to reports from the official Xinhua news agency, the Chinese president in giving instructions to the authorities specified that the "rainfall made the flood situation very serious, causing severe flooding in Zhengzhou and other cities". Xi also asked that "authorities at all levels must always put people's safety and property first and take a leading role in fighting floods".

In particular, the

torrential rain that hit the city of Zhengzhou

caused casualties in the subway. In just under an hour, from 4 to 5 pm, there was 20 centimeters of rain in the city. The streets have turned into rivers and flooded the metro stations. Zhengzhou's famed Shaolin Temple, known for its Buddhist monks' martial arts mastery, was also severely damaged.
