China News Agency, United Nations, July 21. The United Nations Security Council issued a media statement on the 21st, strongly condemning the serious terrorist attack in Baghdad, the Iraqi capital.

According to media reports, an explosion occurred at a market in an area where Shiite people gather in the eastern suburbs of Baghdad on the evening of the 19th.

Due to the important festival on the eve of the Eid al-Adha, there was a large flow of people in the market and the explosion caused heavy casualties.

At least 35 people have died and more than 60 people have been injured, including women and children.

The extremist organization "Islamic State" later claimed responsibility for the attack.

In its statement, the Security Council condemned the despicable and cowardly attack in the "strongest terms" and expressed its deep sympathy and condolences to the victims, their families, and the Iraqi government.

The Security Council reiterated that it will firmly support Iraq’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, democratic process, and development and prosperity.

The statement emphasized that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is one of the most serious threats to international peace and security. The perpetrators, organizers, funders and supporters of terrorist attacks must be held accountable.

The Security Council urges all countries to fulfill their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, and actively cooperate with the Iraqi government and relevant parties to help bring those responsible for the attack to justice.

The Security Council pointed out that no matter what the motive, no matter when and where, no matter who initiated it, any terrorist act is a crime and cannot be justified for any reason.

All countries need to use all means to fight against terrorist acts that threaten international peace and security in accordance with the provisions of the United Nations Charter and relevant international laws.

United Nations Secretary-General Guterres also issued a statement earlier strongly condemning the attack, criticizing the terrorists for "unscrupulous" and calling for the perpetrators to be brought to justice quickly.

The media pointed out that the attack was the most serious terrorist attack in Iraq in the past six months.

Although the Iraqi government announced its victory over the "Islamic State" in 2017, there are still a large number of members of this extremist organization lurking in Iraq, looking for opportunities to carry out terrorist activities.
