The Greek police used tear gas and water cannons on Wednesday evening to break up a demonstration by vaccination opponents in front of the Greek parliament in Athens. The around 3,000 demonstrators, including numerous religious zealots, protested against corona measures that increase the pressure on those who refuse to be vaccinated, reported the state radio and reporters on site. The police said the security forces were deployed because numerous demonstrators had come too close to parliament.
The conservative government has already legally enforced that only vaccinated people are allowed to stay in the interior of restaurants and cultural establishments.
In restaurants, customers are only allowed to sit and no longer dance together.
Employees in the health sector and in geriatric care will also have to be vaccinated in the future, otherwise they can be released from their work and - as long as they are not vaccinated - will not be paid.
The number of new infections in Greece has soared since the beginning of July after extensive easing.
