Will reconciliation be possible?
US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman will visit China on Sunday and Monday to meet with various Chinese leaders.
The meetings will take place in the north of the country in Tianjin and one of them will be with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
By sending the most senior diplomat in Joe Biden's government, the U.S. government intends to "promote American interests and values while responsibly managing the relationship" with the rival power, "as part of ongoing efforts by of the United States to have frank exchanges, the State Department said in a statement on Wednesday.
Particularly strained relations since March
The two great powers are engaged in a bitter confrontation, which the President of the United States presents as a global competition between autocracies and democracies. The head of the American diplomacy Antony Blinken met in March with his Chinese counterparts in Alaska, during a tense meeting which gave rise to the great unpacking of all the irreducible differences between Washington and Beijing, on human rights, the fate of Uyghur Muslims in China or Hong Kong.
In Tianjin, Wendy Sherman "will discuss the subjects on which we have serious concerns about the behavior of China, but also the subjects on which our interests converge," said the State Department.
The Biden administration says it wants to continue to cooperate with Beijing on major global challenges such as the fight against global warming, the management of the health crisis or issues related to disarmament.
