20 July 2021 The European report card on the rule of law rejects Hungary and Poland but also Italy receives a strong note of recall.

"The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly increased the risk of corruption and corruption-related crimes infiltrating the Italian legal economy", reads the chapter dedicated to Italy of the report on the rule of law in the EU 2021. Still in the report: "These measures are particularly important to address the serious challenges related to the efficiency of the judiciary, including arrears and length of proceedings."

However, Italy's effort towards its judicial system is acknowledged, which "continues to undergo a series of reforms aimed at improving its quality and efficiency".

As regards the bill on the Higher Council of the Judiciary for the strengthening of judicial independence, "the reforms take into account the recommendations of the Council of Europe", the report reads.

Finally, on the subject of media regulation, the EU Commission recalled that "Italy has a solid legislative framework with adequate and effective resources", however "the planned reform of the laws on defamation remains pending in Parliament and the political independence of the Italian media remains a worrying issue, especially in the audiovisual sector ".
