Hear more about the work of introducing the method in the clip above.

There have been 400 shootings, of which 43 have been fatal in Greater Gothenburg in the last 10 years, reports P4 Gothenburg.

At the beginning of the year, the politicians in Gothenburg decided to investigate the possibilities of introducing "Stop shooting", a method that has been tested for a few years in Malmö.

There, the project was introduced in 2018 as a collaboration between the police, the prison service, the city of Malmö and civil society.

Since then, the number of shootings in the city has decreased.

But how much "Stop shooting" affected is too early to say, according to researchers from Malmö University who evaluated the project.

Meetings with criminals

The project is based on an American method for reducing serious violent crimes among criminals.

Based on the police survey, about which individuals and groups are involved in violent conflicts, measures are directed, not only at individuals but at the entire group, according to the City of Malmö.

Those who want to drop out of criminal life are offered support.

"Interested in following"

The possibilities of introducing the method in Gothenburg are now being investigated.

- What gives more tools to attack the problems we have, we see as positive.

We try to be a learning organization.

If something seems to work, we are interested in imitating, refining and adapting it locally, says Daniel Neck, crime prevention coordinator at the police in Greater Gothenburg.

What is the key to making this work?

- Our survey is crucial, that we identify the right individuals and groups.

And there we think we have a pretty good view of those who are responsible for the serious violence.

In October, the administration in Gothenburg is expected to be able to present a proposal to politicians in the municipal board.
