The Algerian Foreign Ministry announced the recall of its ambassador in Rabat for consultations.

A ministry statement said that this step came "due to the absence of any positive and appropriate response from the Moroccan side" after Algeria requested clarifications from Rabat regarding its position on supporting a "separatist movement" in the Algerian Kabylie region.

Algeria had requested clarification from Morocco regarding its position on what it described as "the extremely dangerous situation resulting from the rejected statements of the Moroccan ambassador in New York," after "distributing an official memorandum containing Rabat's support for the independence of the Kabylie region."

The Algerian Foreign Ministry statement did not rule out "taking other measures" according to the development that the case will witness.

The diplomatic crisis between the two countries began during the work of the meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement, which was held "remotely" on 13 and 14 July, where the Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra raised the issue of Western Sahara, the region that the Polisario Front demands its separation from Morocco, and which Algeria supports in That, while Morocco considers it an integral part of its territory.

Morocco responded - through its ambassador to the United Nations, Omar Hilal, in a memorandum distributed to the members of the Organization of Non-Aligned Countries, denouncing the raising of the issue of Western Sahara at the meeting, and then speaking about the "right of self-determination for the Kabyle people", which the Algerian authorities considered as support for a movement based in Paris and demanding what Calling it the right to self-determination in the Algerian Kabylie region.

Algeria classifies this movement led by Farhat Mhenni as a "terrorist organization".

In its statement on Sunday, the Algerian Foreign Ministry stated that its previous statement, issued on July 16, 2021, indicated "the need for the Kingdom of Morocco to clarify its final position on the extremely dangerous situation resulting from the rejected statements of its ambassador in New York."

The statement continued, "Due to the absence of any positive and appropriate response from the Moroccan side, it was decided today (Sunday) to summon the Algerian ambassador in Rabat immediately for consultations. It also does not rule out taking other measures, according to the development of the case."
