Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was released after four days in hospital. He had been treated for an intestinal obstruction at the Vila Nova Star private clinic in São Paulo since Wednesday. The right-wing politician had complained of persistent hiccups. Bolsonaro will continue to be observed by a team of doctors after his release on Sunday morning (local time), said the President's Office. “I actually wanted to leave on the first day, but they wouldn't let me. I hope to have another steak in a few days, ”said Bolsonaro as he left the clinic.

At an election campaign event in September 2018, a mentally confused man stabbed the then candidate and seriously injured him in the stomach. The ex-military had continued the election campaign from the hospital bed and was elected the new president the following month. Bolsonaro had to undergo several operations - even after he took office in early 2019. Among other things, his intestinal tract had to be restored.

The 66-year-old head of state was brought from the capital Brasília to São Paulo on Wednesday because he had severe abdominal pain and had been hiccuping for ten days.

In the intensive care unit, he was initially artificially ventilated, as his son Flavio Bolsonaro reported.

The doctor Antônio Macedo, who had already operated on Bolsonaro after the knife attack, had found an intestinal obstruction.

The need for emergency surgery was examined and then ruled out.

In a joint television appearance with Bolsonaro, who was lying in the hospital bed, Macedo blamed complications from the injuries of 2018 for the renewed health problems.

In July of last year, Bolsonaro was also sick with Covid-19, but had only mild symptoms and did not need hospital treatment.
