Starting 2nd, Verstappen from the start overtook Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), his runner-up in the championship, before keeping his lead during the 17 laps of this new format tested by F1.

The two rivals will meet in the front row on Sunday for the Grand Prix, the main event of the weekend with 52 laps.
