TSMC of Taiwan, the world's largest contract manufacturer of semiconductors, has revealed that it is considering establishing a manufacturing base in Japan.

If realized, it is likely to lead to an improvement in manufacturing capacity in Japan.

This was revealed by TSMC CEO Wei Tetsuya at a press conference held online on the 15th.

In this, CEO Wei said that the possibility of establishing a manufacturing base in Japan is "in the examination stage. We will not exclude all possibilities" and revealed that we are proceeding with the examination.

TSMC has agreed with a Japanese semiconductor-related manufacturer to jointly conduct research and development of cutting-edge semiconductors in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and the Japanese side has also expressed its willingness to attract manufacturing bases.

If it is realized, there is a possibility of forming a joint venture with a Japanese company, and as semiconductors become more important from the viewpoint of economic security in addition to the progress of digitalization, it is likely to lead to an improvement in manufacturing capacity in Japan.

On the other hand, TSMC's financial results from April to June are NT $ 372.1 billion, which is 19.8% higher than the same period of the previous year, and more than 1.46 trillion yen in Japanese yen, which is the past quarterly financial results. It became the best.

This is because demand for semiconductors for automobiles was strong amid the ongoing global shortage of semiconductors.

"The tight production capacity is likely to continue into the next year," said Wei.
