11-year-old dog Sigge became ill last weekend and came to Östersund Animal Hospital on Friday night.

Sigge's master reacted to the fact that two hours of examination and X-ray cost SEK 10,000 and that a night of care would have cost an additional SEK 15,000.

But the forecast that Sigge would get better after that was not great.

- I was appalled that a night at the animal hospital would cost SEK 15,000 for an obviously very sick dog with bad odds.

I would rather he die at home.

- I asked if they could come home and kill Sigge, so that my partner would have time to say goodbye, but they could not do that.

Then I took Sigge home and called the district vet.

Within an hour she was in place and Sigge could calmly and quietly fall asleep at home on the bed between us.

Has gone too far

Sune Ek contacted SVT Jämtland and now questions the increasingly expensive veterinary care.

He says he has some understanding that it costs more on weekends and nights, but that it has now gone too far.

- The pricing is absolutely horrible.

There must be some kind of control, but it probably looks the same all over the country, says Sune Ek.

Insurance becomes more expensive

Even though the insurance companies account for the majority, about 75 percent of the cost of care, it becomes very costly for many pet owners when illness and injuries occur.

And insurance premiums are becoming more expensive.

Östersund Animal Hospital is part of Mittnorrlands Djursjukvård AB, which has four other animal hospitals in Jämtland and Västernorrland.
