July 14, 2021 Whirlpool has decided to start the collective dismissal procedure for the workers of the plant in via Argine in Naples. According to union sources, the announcement was made by the top management of the multinational during the online meeting convened by the Mise and in which the company and trade unions are participating.

The CEO of Whirlpool Italy, Luigi La Morgia, in confirming the layoffs, said: "We are aware of our choice, we are the largest investor and manufacturer of household appliances in Italy. Also in the context of the procedure (55 days) we want also confirm our intention to extend the possibility of accessing an incentive package during this period ", continued La Morgia during the meeting, also reiterating the possibility for employees to" transfer within the group ". By now, he notes, "production has stopped in Naples for over 8 months, all production activities". 

"For the Whirlpool site in Naples, the 13 weeks of layoffs would be necessary to guarantee the relaunch while protecting the workers" explained - again according to union sources - the Deputy Minister for Economic Development, Alessandra Todde after the announcement of the start of the dismissal procedure collective for the 350 workers of the Campania plant.

"I too - said the deputy minister - are some important passages. In recent months I have brought an important discontinuity to the table, the unions have announced that they are ready to consider the possibility of the closure of the plant by Whirlpool, which in the past has not It had never happened. Precisely for this reason the company was asked to accept the extension of the cig for a further 13 weeks, which does not mean lengthening the stock, but giving the possibility to a relaunch process - carried out by us and Invitalia - of take shape, with an alternative and solid industrial plan, fundamental in order not to further impoverish the territory of Naples, guaranteeing occupational protection ".

For the deputy minister, "time is needed to strengthen the reindustrialization process, which we are working on every day. Therefore, for the company, accepting the extension of the Cig, postponing the start of the dismissal procedure, is a choice that does not weigh in the least. . While for the workers, for the city of Naples and for the recovery plan we are working on, making this choice is absolutely essential ".

"The narration that you have been good and you have been patient, you could have saved it. For 26 months we did not take time as La Morgia says, we fought to keep the Naples plant open. In these 26 months, Whirlpool has tripled its profits by realizing 5 million products ". This was declared by Barbara Tibaldi, Fiom-Cgil national secretary, who continues: "The workers have kept the Naples plant open and this has allowed Whirlpool to earn more despite the pandemic. We recall the company to its responsibilities. start of the dismissal procedure interrupts the dialogue It is necessary to use all necessary social safety nets, thus respecting the common notice signed by Cgil-Cisl-Uil.As for us if Whirlpool takes offensive actions, it will be war, "he adds." We expect a strong initiative from the government. The government cannot limit itself to taking note, it must intervene ", he concludes.

The unions then underline that "the workers of Naples will respond with force and with exemplary initiatives". For 2.30 pm they called an assembly in the factory to decide the protest initiatives.
