On Tuesday, satellite images showed surface accumulations of algae along the East Skåne coast and up towards Blekinge.

The warm and calm weather is the most pleasant for cyanobacteria, which are popularly called blue-green algae.

It is under these conditions that the algae float up and result in large surface accumulations, such as the one off the Scanian coast right now.

- Just the kind of summer weather that we want, and as it is now.

Warm, calm and sunny.

It is the best weather for the cyanobacteria as well, says Ann-Turi Skjevik, marine biologist at SMHI.

Hopeful forecast

Algae blooms are not uncommon in summer and fortunately the accumulation is expected to drift away from the Scanian coast, according to SMHI's forecasts.

- It is expected to drift east, says Ann-Turi Skjevik, marine biologist at SMHI.

But despite this, bathers in eastern Skåne and Blekinge should be careful as there may still be a risk of algal blooms locally.
