More authentic, less crowded than the seaside resorts, the Marais Vernier in Normandy appeals to tourists looking to return to their roots.

In the largest peat bog in France, bike rides allow you to discover the typical thatched cottages of Normandy and the fauna of the territory.

REPORTAGE

The big holidays begin!

Between seaside resorts, mountains and countryside, tourists have the choice.

The need for nature sometimes leads them to unique places, such as in the Marais Vernier, in the Eure, in Normandy.

A town that is home to a peat bog with an area of 1,800 hectares.

A large plain, marshy meadows as far as the eye can see: a change of scenery after a year under constraints.

"It feels good to be like that in nature. We live again," says Eric, just arrived from Belgium.

The discovery of this particular environment can be done by bike: a 25 km loop to discover the specificities of the territory.

"You are going to discover the half-timbered houses with cows and chickens. At the Marais Vernier, time has stopped a bit", emphasizes Isabelle, who provides bicycle rental.

She is the owner of the bed and breakfast "Les Cigognes".

The discovery of thatched cottages

Emblem of Normandy, the half-timbered houses with their thatched roofs.

“It's very traditional and typical of the Marais Vernier,” recalls Isabelle.

"And with irises on the roof, that's really the Norman characteristic. We still kept this charm of these houses, which are also part of the imagination."

EURE - This weekend we were able to discover this pretty corner of Normandy and explore the Marais Vernier by bike by taking the Chaumières route.
