July 10, 2021There are 33.5 million Italians who have decided to go on vacation for at least a few days in the summer of 2021, a figure which shows substantial stability in departures compared to last year (-1%).

This is what emerges from a Coldiretti / Ixè analysis, which shows that economic difficulties, fear of contagion and fears for the future weigh in order.

Most of the vacationers - Coldiretti underlines in a note - have chosen to delay departures, which are concentrated in the months of July and especially August. On the other hand, the presence of foreign tourists has profoundly changed compared to last year, with a jump of 32% between July and August also thanks to the green pass of the EU green pass, according to Coldiretti projections on Isnart data. A forecast that, reads the note, "confirms the good perception at international level of the progress of the vaccination campaign against Covid and the reduction of new infections in Italy, even if the presences are still much lower than those of the last year before of the pandemic ".

The 2021 holidays show a clear preference of Italians towards national destinations - underlines Coldiretti - for the desire to support 'tricolor' tourism but also for the limits and uncertainties still present for the most popular foreign destinations despite the arrival of the green pass . The confirmation that the Covid emergency has conditioned the choice of the place this year due to the fact that as many as one in three Italians (33%) on vacation remain within their region and only 6% plan to go abroad.

If the beach remains the favorite destination, tourism in the mountains and proximity tourism holds with the rediscovery of small villages and minor centers in the Italian countryside, as an alternative to the most popular tourist destinations, while the presence in the cities collapses. The majority of Italians traveling have chosen to reopen their second homes, or to stay in those of relatives and friends or for rent, but in the ranking of preferences there are pensions and hotels and very popular are the farmhouses which, often located in isolated areas, in family structures with a limited number of beds and tables and large spaces in the green are perhaps the places where it is easier to ensure compliance with the safety measures to defend against contagion outside the home.

Among the favorite entertainment of Italian and foreign tourists alongside art, tradition, relaxation and pure fun, after the long lockdown there is the search for local food and wine and has become the first item of the Made in Italy holiday budget in 2021 with about 1/3 of the expenditure for consumption in restaurants, street food or for the purchase of souvenirs. "Italy is the undisputed world leader in food and wine tourism - concludes Coldiretti - thanks to the primacy of the greenest agriculture in Europe with 315 specialties with geographical indication recognized at community level and 415 Doc / Docg wines, 5266 traditional regional products surveyed along the Peninsula, the leadership in the organic sector with over 80,000 organic operators and the largest world network of farmers' markets and farms with Campagna Amica ".
