European Union leaders don't like to see the United Kingdom win Euro 2020, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron, because of its exit from the European Union, Swedish parliamentarian Peter Lundgren believes.

And many Europeans in the EU's four largest countries believe that since Brexit, relations between British and European politicians have become less cordial.

Many also believe that the EU remains determined to punish the UK for its departure from this regional group.

The findings in an exclusive Euronews poll, conducted by the two pollsters, Redfield and Walton Strategies, reflect the strained relations between the two sides, despite the comprehensive trade agreement reached in December last year.

The poll asked citizens in France, Germany, Italy and Spain whether they thought British politicians' behavior toward the European Union and its members had become more or less friendly, or had not changed after Brexit.

The survey revealed that 51% of citizens in Spain, 43% in Italy, 39% in Germany and 37% in France think that the behavior of the British has become "less friendly". The Euronews poll also revealed that many people in the four European Union countries agree with the statement: "The European Union wants to punish the United Kingdom for leaving the Union."

Lundgren, in an exclusive interview with the Express newspaper, also agrees with this statement, saying: “The European Union is trying to make things difficult for the United Kingdom.” And bigger than ever, and of course, they are not trying to make things easier for the UK.”

When asked if Macron and Angela Merkel would like to see the UK win Euro 2020, Lundgren said: “From my experience, I would say that they certainly would not hope that winning would be in the UK’s interest.” The UK will never succeed in this endeavour.”
