A huge rough diamond was discovered on June 12 in Botswana.

The 1,174-carat stone reached third place on the podium of the largest diamonds in the world and thus dethrones another exceptional stone discovered on June 1 in the same country.

The pebble with silvery reflections, which fits in the palm of the hand, represents a discovery "historic, for us and for Botswana", declared this Wednesday the general manager of the Canadian mining company Lucara.

“In the hierarchy of large stones, it is in third place.

A "fascinating moment" according to the country's president

This latest discovery consolidates Botswana's position as the world leader on the largest stones, with six of the largest diamonds in the world.

President Mokgweetsi Masisi praised this "fascinating moment" and the increasing frequency of diamond discoveries in the country.

The diamond discovered on June 1, of 1,098 carats, belongs to the Debswana company, jointly owned by the government of Botswana and the South African diamond dealer De Beers.

The largest known diamond is the “Cullinan”, over 3,100 carats, unearthed in South Africa in 1905.
