The double murder in Herlev in June 2019 shocked both Sweden and Denmark.

The Østre Landsret, the Danish equivalent of the Court of Appeal, has now sentenced everyone involved to the gang-related shooting.

The three targets, one of whom survived, are linked to the rival criminal network Shottaz and are said to have been tricked into a trap.

Already in the autumn, three of the accused were sentenced to life imprisonment in the first instance, which corresponds to Swedish district court.

The Court of Appeal now confirms that everyone is guilty.

Two of those convicted are:

  • Mohamed Ali, 23, who was named leader of the Death Patrol.

He has admitted to the Court of Appeal that he set fire to the getaway car after the murders, but denied that he was present.

  • Abraham Abdul-Kader, who was 17 at the time of the murder.

He has confessed to murder and causing another person's death in the Eastern High Court

The court's ruling: Everyone is guilty

It was at 1 pm on Thursday that the court in Copenhagen announced that all the accused were considered guilty of a crime.

What now remains before the court is to discuss the sanction.

From the defense side, there is hope that at least the two younger defendants will receive lower sentences because 20 years is the longest sentence minors have ever been sentenced to in Denmark.

In addition, it is the first time foreign nationals have been convicted under Danish gang law, which gives twice as long penalties if the crime can be linked to gang settlements.

Convicted according to Danish gang law

The five members of the Death Patrol are guilty according to the Danish gang legislation.

Eight of the court's nine judges and all three judges believe that section 81 of the Danish Penal Code - commonly referred to as the “gang law” - can also be used against foreign citizens.

The court also rejects Abraham Abdul-Kader's claim that he acted in self-defense when he was subjected to threats, which he claims in the Court of Appeal was a reason why he murdered one of the young men.

He has claimed that the second victim was shot "by mistake".
