Resumption of the distribution of newspapers and magazines in public places

Yesterday, the Media Regulation Office of the Ministry of Culture and Youth issued a decision to resume the distribution of newspapers and magazines in public places in the country, with full compliance with the precautionary and preventive measures regarding the emerging corona virus (Covid-19).

The decision follows a series of meetings held by the office with major newspaper and magazine distribution companies in the country, with the aim of reviewing the procedures for circulating publications of all kinds, in preparation for lifting restrictions on the distribution movement of these companies, and the publishing sector in general in the country.

The decision falls within the UAE’s integrated strategy towards recovery in various vital economic sectors, in addition to supporting the publishing sector in the country, and enriching the cultural and knowledge movement of various segments of society. The decision includes the resumption of the distribution of newspapers and magazines in public places, including restaurants, cafes, hotels and duty free markets.

The Executive Director of the office, Dr. Rashid Al-Nuaimi, said: “The decision to lift distribution restrictions for newspapers and magazines in public places is in line with the national strategy towards promoting the recovery of all sectors, including the media, from the repercussions of the pandemic, and I would like to commend the spirit of cooperation and support that we have experienced from distribution companies during the period. The first of the (Covid-19) pandemic, and we continue the process of cultural development and enrichment of knowledge in the Emirati society, in cooperation with our partners by resuming its activities in distributing its publications in public places, and revitalizing this important sector again.”

Al-Nuaimi pointed out that the newspapers, magazines and publications sector witnessed a remarkable growth during the three years before the “Covid-19” pandemic (2017-2019), as the number of periodicals distributed during that period reached 107,808, with 8,984 titles, which varied between cultural , artistic, social, political, financial and business, as well as specialized topics.
