Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed, a few days ago, that the sanctions imposed by the United States on his country in recent years have produced positive results for Russia.

While he did not identify a single positive case caused by the sanctions, he noted that, in a way, they had boosted Russian technology.

The United States has imposed various sanctions on Russian individuals and companies since Russia illegally annexed Crimea in 2014. The reasons for these sanctions range from human rights violations to Russia's anti-US foreign policy.

Addressing the Russian citizens, Putin said in a television interview: “We have not only adapted to the pressures of sanctions, but they have benefited us in some ways.

There are other positive things, such as the payment system that the country has pioneered (MIR), and the complete strengthening of the financial system.”

The MIR card payment system is a Russian financial services system that came into operation in 2014, after Russia's annexation of Crimea, and after subsequent US sanctions against the country.

“And the fact that they scare us or impose restrictions on the secondary market on our government bonds and loans - well, there are positive aspects to it, the total total debt of the government and the commercial sector in general has decreased, and this also has certain positive aspects,” Putin added.

Putin stressed that he hoped Russian-US relations would return to normal, but added that while the United States appeared to "understand that the world is changing," it was still "trying to maintain its monopoly system."

“The world is changing, and it is changing rapidly, and no matter what sanctions are applied to Russia, no matter what the United States frightens us, Russia is still developing, its economic sovereignty is rising, its defense capacity has reached a very high level, and in many important parameters, it has exceeded many of the countries of the world, and in some of them, surpassed the United States itself.

Russian President:

• “We have not only adapted to the pressures of sanctions, but they have benefited us in some respects. We were able to replace the imported technologies with our own, which increased the production momentum for these technologies.”
