Bobby Cameron, head of the Indigenous Federation of Canada, has called for a boycott of the country's Catholic churches, after the discovery of unmarked graves in its boarding schools.

The official Canadian Broadcasting Corporation quoted Cameron's statements in which he called on members of the Catholic community to boycott going to church.

Cameron said that Catholics should stop going to church until it pays compensation to the families of the victims of $ 25 million.

He explained that boycotting the Catholic Church in Canada is one of the most important ways to deliver a message for indigenous rights.

Last month, the remains of 215 children - some as young as 3 years old - were found buried at the site of what was once Canada's largest Aboriginal boarding school near Kamloops, British Columbia.

It is noteworthy that these schools were under the supervision of the Catholic Church, and these educational institutions remained open until the beginning of the seventies of the last century.

Canadian historians say that between 1883 and 1996, about 150,000 Aboriginal children were forced to "assimilate" the white community in Canada, by attending schools run mostly by Christian missionaries.

These children faced major violations. In 2015, the Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission described what they lived through as a “cultural genocide,” as they were prevented from speaking their native language, raped, sexually assaulted, and even deprived of food, according to many testimonies.
