Pope Francis is recovering from surgery for colon stenosis, a part of the large intestine, at a general hospital in Rome, Italy on the afternoon of the 4th local time, Reuters and Associated Press reported.

The Vatican said that Pope Francis had undergone surgery for colonic stenosis under general anesthesia.

"The 84-year-old Pope is recovering well after undergoing a scheduled operation," Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement.

However, no details were given about the operation, such as how long the Pope will be in the hospital.

Colonic stenosis is a disease that usually occurs in the elderly and is known to cause periodic abdominal pain.
