Forty firefighters remained on Sunday evening to prevent any resumption of this fire "pine forest and scrubland" in the Clape massif, between Gruissan and Narbonne-Plage. Better than expected weather conditions, including new showers on Sunday morning and less strong wind than forecast in the afternoon, helped control the fire, according to Codis.
About 400 firefighters had been mobilized on the ground Saturday.
The Audois firefighters had received reinforcement from colleagues from several nearby departments.
Air assets had also been deployed, namely nine planes (six Canadair and three Dash) and two helicopters which ceased to intervene on Saturday at nightfall.
A judicial inquiry
A helicopter carried out a reconnaissance mission on Sunday morning, but the planes were not reused, Codis said.
The 140 people evacuated from a campsite on Saturday, as well as around thirty people evacuated from their homes, were able to return to their campsite or their home, the Aude prefecture had specified on Sunday morning.
A judicial investigation must determine the causes of this fire. No track is excluded, according to the prefecture.
