Moderate leader Ulf Kristersson received the first exploratory assignment from the Speaker Andreas Norlén.
On Thursday, however, Kristersson announced that there was not enough mandate for him to get through a new government in a vote.
The turn went on to Stefan Löfven to try to seek support for a new government.
- If he informs me that he has a solution, I am prepared to nominate him as Prime Minister the same afternoon, said President Andreas Norlén earlier this week.
No information until Monday
On Monday, Stefan Löfven must give notice and a possible vote may take place a couple of days later.
To pass a vote, he needs to get both the Center Party (C) and the Left Party (V) - and not get 175 or more members against him.
Both the Social Democrats and the Speaker's press service have declined to comment on the situation on Sunday.
The budget vote is crucial
When a prime minister is in place and a government can be formed, the decisive budget vote will take place in November.
Löfven has previously said that he will resign if the budget falls.
- There is a responsibility for the parties that print yellow for Stefan Löfven to also ensure that there is a budget he can control, otherwise a yellow button lacks much of the value, says Left Party party leader Nooshi Dadgostar on Sunday, when the digital Almedalen Week initiated.
The V-leader has said that she will vote yellow and thus release Löfven as prime minister, but demands influence over the budget.
- We are ready and willing to negotiate and ensure that there is a state budget we can accept in its entirety.
In the event that we do not have a settlement, we will of course vote on our own budget.
