Hesse's Prime Minister Volker Bouffier (CDU) awarded the Wilhelm Leuschner Medal on Saturday in Eltville in the Rheingau.

The highest award in the state went to the former bishop of the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck, Martin Hein, the former president of the state parliament, Norbert Kartmann (CDU), the former mayor of Frankfurt, Andreas von Schoeler, and the writer Minka Pradelski.

The celebration took place in Eberbach Monastery. Due to the corona pandemic, the award ceremony was canceled last year. Traditionally, the Wilhelm Leuschner Medal is actually presented on December 1st, the Hessian constitutional day. People are honored who have made outstanding contributions to democratic society. Wilhelm Leuschner was a resistance fighter against the Nazi regime. After the assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944, he was sentenced to death and executed.
