The sinking of a ferry off the coast of Bali (Indonesia) left at least seven dead and seven missing overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday.

"We are still looking for the missing," said the head of the island's rescuers.

The sinking would be due to rough seas at the time of the events.

The rescue operations were moreover "complicated by the low visibility and the high waves", specified the person in charge of the rescue.

Frequent shipwrecks in the archipelago

The ferry, dubbed KMP Yunicee, carried 57 passengers and crew.

It sank this Tuesday evening near the port of Gilimanuk, to the west.

He was making crossings from the neighboring island of Java.

Several dozen survivors were rescued.

The precise cause of the accident is not known at this stage.

Maritime accidents are common in the Indonesian archipelago, which has more than 17,000 islands.

Not all ferries and boats meet safety standards.

In 2018, more than 160 people drowned when a ferry sank on Lake Toba on the island of Sumatra.

In 2009, the accident of a ferry between the islands of Celebes and Borneo killed more than 300 people.
