A French tourist has been found dead on the Greek island of Crete, Greek police said Thursday.

The body of the 29-year-old young woman was found 5 km from the famous Elafonisi beach in a ravine, difficult to access, according to the police.

A forensic pathologist was expected Thursday afternoon at the scene according to the same source.

The Frenchwoman had been missing since June 24, the date of her last contact with her parents.

According to local media, the French national who was on vacation in Crete was supposed to fly back to France on June 28, which worried the Greek authorities who had issued a wanted notice at the request of the family.

The tourist's rental car was found near Elafonissi beach, which must be reached on foot.

A dozen police, firefighters, rescuers and a helicopter had been mobilized for several days to find the trace of the young woman.
