Investigators from St. Petersburg are working with Badanin, who previously worked as editor-in-chief of Dozhd and RBC.

They flew to Moscow to interrogate Badanin and his subordinate, Maria Zholobova, in the case of libel against the St. Petersburg businessman Ilya Traber.

"The case was initiated at the request of the businessman's family members," the RT source said.

The reason was the documentary film of the TV channel "Rain" called "St. Petersburg.

Father and son".

It told about the Traber family, who allegedly built a business thanks to their connections with the country's top leadership.

At the time of the initiation of the criminal case, Badanin was in the status of a witness.

Also the employees of "Dozhd" who took part in the filming of the film became witnesses in the case.

Where Badanin will spend the next few weeks - in a pre-trial detention center or at home - depends on the severity of the charges.

According to Article 108 of the Criminal Procedure Code, only a person who faces more than three years in prison can be arrested.

If the article under which Badanin is accused provides for less than two years in prison, he will be chosen a milder measure, for example, house arrest or subscription.

According to RT sources, the Main Investigation Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in St. Petersburg in November 2017 opened a criminal case on the most serious, 5th, part of Article 128.1 of the Criminal Code or a grave or especially grave crime "). It provides for up to five years in prison.
