Many Hessians do not want to come back to the office after the end of the home office obligation on July 1st, at least not completely.

According to a study by the health insurance company DAK Hessen, 58 percent of those surveyed could imagine working from home for at least half of their time in the future, as shown by data from the home office study, for which 1000 employed Hessen were surveyed in a representative sample.

  • Follow I follow

Accordingly, before the outbreak of the corona pandemic in Hesse, only eleven percent of employees were in the home office several times a week.

This value multiplied during the corona lockdowns: During the corona waves, every second person was regularly working from home.

Almost half of employees with home office experience want to continue to work at least half of their working hours from home in the future.

In addition, there are 11 percent who almost no longer want to go to the office.

“The home office is now firmly established among employees and for many a model of the future.

You noticed how easy it is to work in your own four walls, ”says Sötkin Geitner, head of the Hessian DAK state representative.

The reason why the Hessians would like home work to be taken into account as part of the future world of work seems to lie in the positive experiences they have recently had with it.

In Hesse, 88 percent of men and women in the home office say that basically suitable tasks can be done here just as well as in the normal workplace in the company.

Even after months at home, they are still satisfied with this model: Six out of ten perceive themselves to be more productive and perceive their work as more pleasant than in the office.

    Employees appreciate time savings

What employees particularly appreciate is the time saved because they no longer have to travel to work (79 percent), but also that tasks can be distributed more specifically over the day (70 percent).

In addition, 86 percent state that they can better combine work and family.

But there are also downsides to working at home.

39 percent of employees with children say that they are often distracted at work by the parallel care.

In addition, a large majority criticized the fact that their company only gave them a laptop for home work, which makes work more difficult.

Too little movement in the home office

The study shows serious health risks for employees, said Geitner. “The home office makes many people grumpy about movement.” 74 percent of those surveyed said that they were less active in the home office than before the pandemic. According to this, a good half of the employees simply do not have a walk or bike path to work. According to Geitner, the consequences are weight gain and more back problems. In addition, the risk of chronic diseases increases. "Since many employees will work less in the office even after Corona, we have to focus more on health in the home office," Geitner demands.
