British Prime Minister

Boris Johnson

on Tuesday condemned the "despicable harassment" and "intimidation" that two men subjected in a London park to the medical director for England,

Chris Whitty,

who plays a leading role in the national response to the pandemic.

The conservative leader today referred to the incident on his Twitter account, whose recording, disseminated on social networks and the media, shows how Whitty is harassed, when he walks in a park, by two men who do not stop berating him.

"I condemn the behavior of these hooligans. Our hard-working public officials should not have to face this type of bullying on our streets and we will not tolerate it," Johnson said in a tweet.

The London Metropolitan Police (Met) is investigating the video that collects what happened, which lasts about 20 seconds and was apparently recorded in St James Park, and shared on social networks.

The images clearly show how two men grab Professor Whitty and harass him while sarcastically saying: "A photo, please?"

When the official tries to get rid of these subjects to continue walking, they both grab him again.

In the video, a voice is also heard saying: "Leave this gentleman alone", just before the recording ends.

In addition to Johnson, the British Interior Minister,

Priti Patel

,

has also reacted to the incident

, who assured, in statements to Times Radio, that she was "horrified" by what happened.

"It is terrible to see such an important public figure, someone who day after day has been serving the country to keep us safe, be subjected to such egregious abuse," said Patel.
