There are many variants of the coronavirus, but the delta variant, or the Indian variant, is one of the mutations classified as of particular importance.

- It was expected that the delta variant would be discovered here as well, because it is so widespread in the rest of Sweden.

But we have good capacity for infection tracing to limit the spread as far as possible, says Maria Tempé, deputy infection control doctor.

The people who have been tested positive for the delta virus have probably been infected abroad and these are people in their 40s and 60s, the region writes on its website.

Two doses of vaccine

The delta variant is more contagious than the alpha variant, which was the dominant one in Västernorrland during the spring.

Two doses of vaccine are required to have adequate protection against it.

- It is therefore important that you take your second vaccine dose and that you plan your summer activities so that you can take dose two, says Maria Tempé.

The spread of infection has decreased in the county in recent months and according to the region's own statistics, which are preliminary, a total of 18 infections were reported last week, of which three had the delta variant.
