The Chicago Tribune reported that a series of shootings, believed to have been carried out by gangs, in Chicago, USA, are reminiscent of war.

Chicago Police said two mass shootings occurred in a southern residential area in the two hours beginning at 8:45 p.m. on Sunday.

In the South Shore district, a utility vehicle approached and opened fire on people standing in front of a sandwich shop.

Six people were shot, including a 15-year-old boy, and the woman who was shot six times died.

Subsequently, three men in ski masks opened fire on people gathered in the alley at Marquette Park, not far from here.

Eleven people were shot and one woman was killed.

Police said the victims ranged in age from teens to 50s.

The Chicago Tribune reported that 77 people were shot and 7 died in Chicago over the weekend, according to its own tally.

"Retaliation is begetting another retaliation," said Democrat Mayor Rory Lightfoot, who suspects the shooting stemmed from a conflict between Chicago's infamous gangs.

Mayor Lightfoot lamented that the gangs were shooting innocent people and children in an attempt to bring 'street justice' to themselves.

One victim's family said: "They irresponsibly shoot at anyone they see, whether it's parents or children."

So far this year, 1,910 people have been shot in Chicago, killing at least 326 and injuring 1,584.
