On Monday morning, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven announced his resignation.

Instead of by-elections, it will now be the task of President Andreas Norlén to probe and try to find a new government alternative.

"The President will dismiss the Prime Minister during the day.

After that, he will call party leaders and spokespersons for talks as soon as possible, a so-called presidential round ", writes his press secretary Pernilla Eldblom to TT.

According to Stefan Löfven, there is no doubt that it is the Left's actions that have led to today's difficult political situation.

At the press conference, the Prime Minister complained that the party had chosen to ally itself with the right-wing conservative parties.

The statement received a quick response from the left.

"The only people we have allied ourselves with are the tenants," the Left Party wrote on its official twitter account.

"The condition of parliamentary democracy is that a government must be tolerated by the Riksdag.

Löfven tried to ignore it.

A bit of humility in the face of that would have been dressy ", writes former left-wing leader Jonas Sjöstedt.

Åkesson: Extraval could have done that for Löfven

According to the Sweden Democrats' party leader Jimmie Åkesson, today's message from the Prime Minister was expected.

- He has probably not shown any major interest in a by-election.

And it is quite reasonable, partly the own situation with the pandemic but also the own public opinion situation.

We also have an environmental party that is on fire in opinion polls.

So an extra choice could have made a real difference for Löfven, says Åkesson.

The Green Party's spokesperson Märta Stenevi is still hoping for a new agreement to avoid a change of power.

- We need to find some form of June agreement with the parties that do not want to see a Kristersson government, Stenevi says to SVT.

Receives no support from L

The Liberals, who were part of the January agreement, have since the no-confidence vote said that they will work for a bourgeois government and not for a new agreement with S, MP and C. Getting support from the Liberals still looks difficult for Stefan Löfven.

"Looking forward so much to voting green for Kristersson and a liberal, bourgeois government!", Writes Liberal MP Robert Hannah on Twitter.

SVT has sought all the parliamentary parties for a comment.

The Liberals and Moderates have declined.
