June 13, 2020The riots caused by a group of inmates from the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison ended in the early afternoon. This was announced by the Ministry of Justice, explaining that the "situation at the moment is back to normal with the detainees being taken back to their cells".

The deputy head of the Dap, Roberto Tartaglia, visited the Danube department where the riots had taken place and met a large representation of prison police personnel working in that department, listening to their requests and focusing in particular on the problems of the structure and on staff work. Subsequently a first meeting was held which was attended by the regional administrator of Campania, the director of the institute, the commander of the Penitentiary Police department and the health workers present.

Inmates transferred

"In the meantime, at the disposal of the Head of the Department Bernardo Petralia, who is monitoring the evolution of events and is heading towards the San Marino institution, the Mobile Operational Group of the Penitentiary Police is sending over 70 units to the Campania institutions - informs note from the ministry - Petralia has also asked the General Directorate of Detainees and Treatment of the DAP to order

the immediate transfer of the prisoners involved in the riots out of the region ".

The revolt in the night

During the revolt in the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison that began last night, six officers were attacked, three of which ended up in hospital. One cell was set on fire by two inmates. The revolt, according to union sources, broke out in the Danube department where the so-called "problematics", non-EU citizens and other subjects who in the past have been the protagonists of episodes of intemperance are found.

Salvini argues

The strong tensions that are occurring in the Campania prison have triggered yet another long-distance clash between the leader of the League, Matteo Salvini and the Minister of Justice, Alfonso Bonafede. "First the revolt in prison, without a criminal being punished. Then 48 policemen under investigation for 'torture', and tonight other violence and other injured policemen. Enough, the limit has been exceeded: Minister Bonafede, wake up!" attacks Salvini from his social profiles.

Bonafede replies

The minister's reply is not long in coming: "On the part of certain politics there was a shameful exploitation of what happened in Santa Maria Capua Vetere." And he continues: "There is an investigation by the judiciary which, as always, must be respected and we have full confidence in the checks ordered by the Attorney General, Luigi Riello, regarding the methods of control and notification implemented on Thursday morning. But the value of the body of the Penitentiary Police has never been questioned and deserves respect. Instrumentalizing situations like these to attack me - he concludes - I find it really mean ".
